Your local councils do provide some outstanding links and information. Often one of the best places to visit to find out information about your local area and of course about regulations and requirements associated your project. Council will be able to provide both planning and building information. As we have many clients providing us with very differing and conflicting statements from "council staff" we always suggest to ensure you (1) Identify the staff member name (2) Their position is qualified to provide such advice and (3) Gain written confirmation from the council particularly when the advise is obtained that a planning or building permit is "not required" for your project. This can reduce many problems later. It is our experience that most council will be more than happy to assist and provide information about your obligations. With the complexity of what you can and can't do on "your" property especially when building we suggest to contact "your" council to check what, if any, issues may be required to be completed to registerer and gain a building permit, or simply to have any structure addition to your property.
