Dowel (precision wood) Bits - these specially suited for drilling clean, exact round holes in hardwoods, chipboard, plywood and all natural woods

Two spurs and the lead point ensure the drill maintains it's position to stop it following the grain and wandering off center. Flutes are engineered for clean effective chip removal

High Speed Steel Twist Drill Bits

Generally made from high quality steel (normally a cheap bit is exactly that cheap) designed to drill efficiently in metals.

They can also be used in wood and plastics. In wood they can wander in direction of grain (refer dowel bits above)

Hint
Always ensure workplace is secured by clamps to prevent material slipping, mark center of hole with center punch to prevent drill tip wandering.
Large hole - start with a smaller bit to establish hole then move to larger bits progressively  (particularly on large holes)

Masonry Drill Bits
Use for drilling into stone, brick, concrete, tiles, etc. Suitable for Hammer and Rotary drilling

Superior Hammer / Masonry Drill Bits
Designed for faster, cleaner drilling into masonry, glass, ceramics and marble. Normally with industrial grade carbide tip able to withstand up to twice the temperature of conventional bits                                                                                     to hints

R.P.M          RECOMMENDED SPEEDS FOR DRILLING WITH ANY HIGH SPEED DRILL
HINT: Using a lubricant can greatly enhance drill life, cutting action, accuracy and hole size. Except for a few materials a cutting fluid will provide best performance.

Material            Lubricant

Aluminum          Kerosene
Brass                 Kerosene, light machine oil
Bronze               Kerosene, light machine oil
Cast Iron            Dry
Plastics              Dry
Wood                 Dry
Copper              Light machine oil
Steel                  Light machine oil
Wrought iron     Light Machine Oil

REMEMBER ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING WHEN DRILLING

HINTS AND TIPS

Masonry Drilling

  • When drill remember to withdraw bit the clear the drill
  • Don't drill at too high a speed as will dull the drill bit
  • Recommended Speeds - Drill to 10mm - 750 rpm -  10 - 20mm - 400 rpm
  • Do not cool a hot drill with a liquid (water) as may crack tip
  • Avoid hard aggregate and wire reinforcing
  • When drilling ceramics and tiles - mask point of drill with tape to reduce wandering

Always consult manufacturers instructions prior to purchase to ensure product selection matches your requirements
